President Marcos Jr. Awards Nine Traditional Artists, Including Three from Lake Sebu

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. conferred the 2023 Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) award on nine outstanding traditional artists in recognition of their contributions to preserving and promoting the Philippines' cultural identity through traditional arts, crafts, and storytelling.

The conferment ceremony took place on Wednesday, May 7, at the Metropolitan Theater in Manila.

Established under Republic Act No. 7355, the GAMABA honors Filipino traditional artists who demonstrate excellence and unwavering dedication to their craft.


Among the awardees are three cultural masters from Lake Sebu, South Cotabato:

· Rosie Sula – recognized for Tboli epic chanting

· Bundos Fara – honored for Tboli brass casting

· Barbara Ofong – acknowledged for Tboli tnalak weaving

“Ang ating pagkakakilanlan bilang Pilipino ay hinubog ng mayamang kultura at tradisyong minana natin sa ating mga ninuno–kayamanang ating iniingatan at ipapasa sa susunod na mga henerasyon,” Marcos said in his speech.

(Our identity as Filipinos has been shaped by the rich culture and traditions we inherited from our ancestors—a treasure we safeguard and will pass on to future generations.)

· Adelita Bagcal – dallot (Ilocano oral poetry)

· Abina Coguit – Manobo embroidery

· Hadja Sakinur-ain Delasas – Sama igal (traditional dance)

· Marife Ganahon – Higaonon banig weaving

· Amparo Mabanag – Ga’dang embroidery

· Samporonia Madanlo – Mandaya ikat weaving
