Consumers Demand Change, Reject Politics in SOCOTECO II Management

GENERAL SANTOS CITY — The Bantay Kuryente Movement has released the results of a snap consumer survey revealing strong dissatisfaction among Member-Consumer-Owners (MCOs) with the current state of SOCOTECO II.

The survey, which covered 100 respondents from General Santos City, Sarangani Province, South Cotabato, and nearby areas, highlights a clear call for reform in the cooperative’s management and services.

Results show that 91.5% of consumers are willing to accept slight increases in power rates if it means eliminating brownouts and improving customer service, while only 8.5% prefer to maintain the status quo.

Respondents also expressed a strong desire to retain co-ownership and a voice in management, with 95.7% rejecting a full private takeover of the utility.

In addition, the survey recorded a unanimous sentiment: 100% of respondents want politics and politicians kept out of SOCOTECO II, underscoring demands for professional, service-oriented leadership.

“These results confirm what consumers have been saying for years: they want more reliable power supply, even at a little additional cost, and improvement in customer service,” Bantay Kuryente said in its statement.

The group urged SOCOTECO II’s Board of Directors to respect the voice of MCOs. The group also called on National Electrification Administration (NEA) and regulators to ensure transparency and competitive bidding in the cooperative’s ongoing privatization process.
