Bantay Kuryente Joins Power Cooperative Monitoring Group

KABACAN, Cotabato Province — Consumer advocacy group Bantay Kuryente Consumer Watch Inc. has been appointed to a newly formed government body tasked with overseeing the modernization of the South Cotabato II Electric Cooperative.

The Regional Development Council XII approved the appointment through Resolution No. 44 during its March 25 meeting here. The decision places the watchdog group, formerly known as the Bantay Kuryente Movement, into a technical working group representing the private sector.

The new monitoring group aims to fast-track SOCOTECO II’s capital expenditure projects and development plans amid rising power demands driven by regional economic growth. SOCOTECO II serves General Santos City, Sarangani province, and parts of South Cotabato.

Under the resolution, the group will align infrastructure upgrades with the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 and regional development goals.

"We are honored to be part of the TWG and we will do our best to contribute positively to the task of improving the quality, reliability and sustainability of SOCOTECO II services," Bantay Kuryente said in a statement.

The panel bridges government and private sectors. Government members include the Department of Energy, National Electrification Administration, Mindanao Development Authority, and the Department of Economy, Planning and Development XII. Local government units from General Santos City, Sarangani, and South Cotabato are also represented.

Private sector members alongside Bantay Kuryente include SOCOTECO II and the business chambers of General Santos City and Sarangani.
