KORONADAL CITY — South Cotabato will launch its first Fashion Design Competition on July 12 at the Habi Hotel here, kicking off the 27th Tnalak Festival with a focus on local heritage.
The high-stakes event challenges 12 local designers to conceptualize and produce two garments—streetwear and avant-garde—within a single day, mirroring the format of the reality television show "Project Runway Philippines."
"This was our dream even before," said Jimmy Gayanilo, event co-collaborator. "It’s all about bringing the Tnalak into a national or international stage... we will focus on the fabric of the tribe people because South Cotabato is very rich in culture."
The roster features a mix of neophytes and seasoned professionals, including Jozel Ignes, Hurryle Padilla, Jose Nacionales, Raymart Ortillano, Aljethro Sebastian, Ivan Raborar, Dante Mana, Mark Pabon, Rey Flores, Archie Castillo, and Kim Lacson. One confirmed contestant is a past "Project Runway Philippines" competitor.
Organizers will provide all materials and sewing machines, which participants will keep after the event. The winner will receive a tax-free cash prize of 100,000 pesos ($1,715). National fashion figures Jaggy Glarino and Patrick Lazu, director of the Fashion Institute of the Philippines, will judge the contest.
The privately organized event will be covered by fashion publications Mega Magazine and Preview PH. Tickets for the red-carpet gala and buffet dinner are available for 1,500 pesos at Yami’s Croissant on Sergio Osmeña Street and through local designers.
